Biographical Note
The Fell family established spice mills in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1766, purveyed by the mid-nineteenth century ground spices, coffees, chocolates, and mustards, as well as drugs and flour. In 1828, Jonathan Fell (1771-1829) bought Oliver Evans' (1755-1819) mill at Faulkland from John Foulk (1780-1850).
On Fell's death in 1829, the firm was managed by his two eldest sons, Courtland J. Fell (1803-1848) and Thomas Jenks Fell (1805-1834), as C.J. Fell & Bro.; after their deaths, by their brothers Franklin Fell (1814-1875) and Jonathan Fell, Jr. (1816-1868). The latter, a physician, gradually left its management to his brother Franklin Fell and son William Jenks Fell (1839-1903).
Both father and son lived in Philadelphia as well as Faulkland; both were prominent in Episcopal affairs, specifically at Grace Church in Philadelphia and St. James in Newport, as well as Diocesan fundraising and national conventions; both invested substantially in Philadelphia real estate, railways, and gas and coal companies.
In addition, Franklin Fell purchased the Brandywine Springs property near Faulkland from Peter Coyle (1820-1882) in 1869, intending to find an Episcopal girls' boarding school, which did not materialize. The construction in 1871 of the Wilmington & Western Railroad connected the Springs to Wilmington and launched it as a resort. Franklin Fell also served as an officer of the Seamen's Savings Fund, the Buck Mountain Coal Co., and the Wilmington & Western Railroad. William Jenks Fell was an officer of the Peninsular Trust Co., the Fidelity Mutual Life Insurance Co., and the Enterprise Real Estate Improvement Co., and his many business interests incurred considerable litigation.
