Biographical Note
Louis Albert Cazenove (1807-1852) was a merchant at the firm Cazenove & Co. in Alexandria, Virigina. He was the son of Ann Hogan Cazenove (1775-1843) and Anthony Charles Cazenove (1775-1852). His grandfather was Théophile Cazenove (1740-1811), a Dutch-born financier who had acted as purchasing agent for Dutch speculators in American state and federal securities in the years between 1763 and 1788. The family settled in Philadelphia in the 1790s, but moved to Virginia sometime after 1800, where Anthony Charles Cazenove established a mercantile firm, Cazenove & Co. that traded with northern Europe. Louis Cazenove became the senior partner at the firm before his death.
Scope and Contents
This journal is the first volume of Cazenove's European tour entitled, "Jornal of a voyage across the Atlantic and sbsequent tour thro' a part of England, France, Italy, Switzerland, Holland, Germany, France, England, Scotland, Ireland & England and return voyage to America : commenced in October 1829 & ended in December 1830." Only volume one is extant, covering October 1829 through May 7, 1830; the second volume, covering May 8, 1830 through December 1830, is missing.
By the time this journal was written, Cazenove had already spent two years in school in his father's native Switzerland. The entries are very descriptive. The author landed at Liverpool and proceeded to London; his descriptions of Blenheim Palace and Oxford are thorough. These are followed by detailed accounts of Paris and Versailles. He visited Rouen, Nantes, Toulouse, Montpellier, Nimes, Avigon, Aix-en-Provence, Marseilles, Genoa, Pavia, Milan, Bologna, Florence, Pisa, Rome, Naples, and Pompeii. Volume one ends with Cazenove's arrival at Terni, on his way northward in Italy.
Among the important people whom he met were Louis Bonaparte, the former King of Holland, General Lafayette, and the American banker Samuel Welles of Paris. There is also a list of names at the end of the volume, some of which may have been business customers of Cazanove's father.
