Biographical Note

Sophie du Pont Ford (1871-1957) was the daughter of Victor du Pont (1828-1888) and Alice Hounsfield du Pont (1833-1904). Victor du Pont was an attorney in Wilmington, Delaware, and was a son of Charles I. du Pont (1797-1869).

In 1904, she married Bruce Ford (1873-1931), vice president of Electric Storage Battery Company.

Ford helped unveil the Dupont Circle fountain in Washington, D.C., in 1921, which replaced a statue of her grandfather, Samuel Frances du Pont (1803-1865).

Upon her death, Ford left her home, "Boxwood," to the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania as a residence for the diocesan bishop.

Scope and Contents

The Sophie du Pont Ford (1871-1957) papers primarily contain diaries but also include a scrapbook with newspaper clippings, an address book with family birth dates, and a book with watercolor and text entitled "Life of Branch H. Giles." The diaries have sporadic entries about financial investments and the weather; the few personal activities are in French. The scrapbook with newspaper clippings relates to E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., the death of Alfred V. du Pont (1833-1893), and local Wilmington, Delaware, items.
