This item is a bill for a coffin for Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817), a French political economist, writer, publisher, and public administrator. Du Pont de Nemours immigrated to the United States in 1800 with his sons Victor Marie du Pont (1767-1827) and Eleuthère Irénée "E.I." du Pont (1771-1834). In 1802, his younger son established the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company on the banks of the Brandywine River for the manufacture of gunpowder.
