Scope and Contents

This item is a bill for a coffin for Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817), a French political economist, writer, publisher, and public administrator. Du Pont de Nemours immigrated to the United States in 1800 with his sons Victor Marie du Pont (1767-1827) and Eleuthère Irénée "E.I." du Pont (1771-1834). In 1802, his younger son established the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company on the banks of the Brandywine River for the manufacture of gunpowder. Du Pont de Nemours died at Eleutherian Mills, the home of E.I. du Pont on the site of powder yards, on August 7, 1817, after helping fight a fire in the factory.
