Scrapbooks, 1935-1984
Part of collection: American Artists Group records (2768)
Dates
- Creation: 1935-1984
Scope and Contents
This series consists of scrapbooks containing publicity and promotional materials that document the work of American Artists Group and its artists. It has been arranged into four sub-series: Newspaper clippings scrapbooks, Magazine clippings scrapbooks, Form letters and mailing pieces scrapbooks, and 1947 promotional books.
The Newspaper clippings scrapbooks sub-series contains mostly newspaper clippings, along with some magazine clippings, correspondence, and television/radio scripts. Many of the scrapbooks include an index. Additional laid-in materials have been filed alongside the scrapbook in which they were found. The scrapbooks are large volumes that date between 1935 and 1981. Materials between 1982 and 1984 were gathered with the intention of being placed in a publicity scrapbook, but were never assembled. These materials include letters accompanying either a press release or an article, a radio interview, and a report to the National Association of Greeting Card Publishers.
The Magazine clippings scrapbooks sub-series contains mostly national magazines that publicized AAG. These scrapbooks also contain some newspaper clippings. The topics covered overlap with the newspaper clippings scrapbooks; some full issues of magazines from 1936 to 1942 are included.
The Form letters and mailing pieces scrapbooks sub-series contains letters, brochures, booklets, and cards or other types of materials related to the artwork. These materials are aimed at AAG sales personnel, department store buyers, wholesale merchants, and shop owners and other retailers. One scrapbook from 1955 focuses on a line of social stationery called "Art in Correspondence."
The 1947 promotional books sub-series contains a series of sales books from 1947. Each volume consists of similar content, but not all pages are in the same order, and not all volumes contain the same pages. These scrapbooks feature sales and display information for store managers and buyers. There are photographic prints depicting different displays, and some volumes include artist biographical information. Unlike the other scrapbooks, which were assembled by hand, these seem to have been professionally printed and assembled.
