- Creation: 1862-1960
Historical Note
In 1858, the DuPont Company bought a powder mill on Wapwallopen Creek in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. This was the nucleus of the affiliated E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company of Pennsylvania. Lammot du Pont (1831-1884) supervised the installation of machinery and organized the operation to meet the needs of the coal mining district, and Charles Augustus Belin (1816-1889) became manager in 1859, to be succeeded by William J. Scott in 1872, who was followed by Belin's nephew Henry Belin, Jr. (1843-1917). In 1903, this operation merged with Moosic Powder Co., Consumers Powder Co., Laflin Powder Manufacturing Co., Oliver Powder Co., and Enterprise Powder Manufacturing Co. to form the E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company of Pennsylvania. In 1931, the company closed its books, and assets were transferred to E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, Inc.; the final dissolution came in 1948.
