Biographical Note

Jasper Elliot Crane (1881-1969) was a chemist and vice president of E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. from 1929 to 1946. Crane began his career in plastics with the Arlington Co., in New Jersey, in 1901. This company was acquired by the DuPont Company in 1915, and Crane became head of the Cellulose & Solvents Division of the Chemical Department. During World War I, he was in research concerned with poison gas defense, smokeless powder containers, and coatings for airplane wings. He was later in London as DuPont's European manager, in charge of purchasing and development, and participated in important negotiations with European chemical companies. In 1926, he was recalled from London to manage the new DuPont subsidiary, Lazote, Inc., organized to synthesize ammonia. He later had an important role in establishing the Ammonia Department and its high-pressure synthesis plant at Belle, West Virginia. In 1929, he was elected a vice president and member of the Executive Committee and served until 1946.

Scope and Contents

The papers document Crane's work on the executive committee of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. Included are records documenting negotiations over cooperative research projects and market sharing with Imperial Chemical Industries (1929-1946) and with I.G. Farbenindustrie (1929-1941). The papers also describe the Nye Committee's Munitions investigation (1934-1940). Crane was involved in the construction of war production plants during the Second World War, and this is also documented in the records. Also included are reports from the Development Department (1931-1932) and records describing the administration of the "A" bonus system (1932-1945).
