Historical Note
The Grasselli Chemical Company was established by Eugene Ramiro Grasselli (1810-1882) in Cincinnati in 1839. In 1886 it moved its headquarters and major production facilities to Cleveland. During the 19th century, the company became a major producer of sulfuric acid, nitric acid, baking soda, chloroform, and pharmaceutical chemicals. In the 1850s, the company became a major producer of kerosene. In the mid-1870s, Grasselli became the DuPont Company's major supplier of sulfuric acid, which was used to make nitroglycerin. During the First World War, Grasselli entered the explosives business establishing the Grasselli Powder Company. In 1928 Grasselli was absorbed by E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company.
Scope and Contents
The Grasselli Chemical Company materials contain the records which were conveyed to the DuPont Company after the 1928 merger. Included are the Board of Directors and Executive Committee minutes. Also included are account books (1843-1870), real estate records, maps of the Cleveland, Ohio, site (1885-1891), blueprints of workmen's homes and site (1916), and records of the Grasselli Mining Corp. Records of the Executive Committee document all aspects of company operations, including research and development, sales, contracts, foreign operations, real estate transactions, labor relations, and safety programs.
