Scope and Contents
This subseries consists of materials related to Catalyst on Campus, one of four initial programmatic areas established by Catalyst after its founding in 1962. It contains materials related to Catalyst on Campus activities, as well as other early initiatives crafted to support undergraduate women and campus communities, whether they were branded with the “Catalyst on Campus” phrase or not. The subseries is further divided into Catalyst on Campus conference, Phi Chi Theta workshop, Model Staff Training Program, Campus Resource, and Publications.
The Catalyst on Campus conference was held May 15-16, 1964, at Margaret Morrison Carnegie College, Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). It was Catalyst’s first major event, and it attracted sixty-five educators who met to discuss ways in which to support female students. This subseries consists of two copies of the conference proceedings and correspondence between Catalyst staff members and conference co-chair Dr. Roger W. Heyns (1918-1995). These materials were likely given to Catalyst by Heyns at a later date.
--The Phi Chi Theta workshop was held June 20, 1974, in St. Louis, Missouri, with members of the national co-educational business fraternity on attitudes toward women in work and women’s advancement. This subseries consists of the workshop agenda, data analysis, notes, and ninety-four survey responses.
--The Model Staff Training Program was a project funded by Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education intended to assist colleges and universities in responding to the career needs of undergraduate women. Five participating regional colleges and universities formed teams composed of one faculty member, one administrator, and one staff member; teams attended two semesters of training sessions conducted by Catalyst (spring and fall 1977), then developed projects that were implemented and assessed over the course of spring semester 1978. Participating institutions included Iona College (New Rochelle, New York), Pace University (New York, New York), Rockland Community College (Suffern, New York), Rutgers University—Newark (Newark, New Jersey), and SUNY Stony Brook (Stony Brook, New York). The project produced a manual titled, “Creating Change for College Women: The Catalyst Model Staff Training Program” (1978), and was designed to be replicated. This subseries consists of the project proposal and program description, planning documents, notes and evaluations from program activities, and final project report.
--The Campus Resource was a Catalyst program designed to increase students’ awareness of career and personal life options while teaching them about the changing roles of men and women. It included curriculum development and educational programming at the College of St. Thomas (St. Paul, Minnesota), Southern Methodist University (Dallas, Texas), and Smith College (Northampton, Massachusetts). The project resulted in the publication, “New Roles for Men and Women: A Report on an Educational Intervention with College Students” (1987). This subseries consists of factsheets, mailings, advisory board materials, a report on the St. Thomas project, and two versions of the final publication.
--The Publications subseries consists of a typescript copy of a guide to math-related careers, prepared by Catalyst, and a profile on women’s college graduates prepared by the Women’s College Coalition, Washington, D.C.
