Biographical Note

Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834), founder of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, and Sophie Madeleine Dalmas du Pont (1775-1828) had four daughters: Victorine (du Pont) Bauduy (1792-1861), Evelina (du Pont) Bidermann (1796-1863), Eleuthera (du Pont) Smith (1806-1876), and Sophie Madeleine (du Pont) Du Pont (1810-1888). The couple also had three sons: Alfred Victor du Pont (1798-1856), Henry du Pont (1812-1889), and Alexis Irénée du Pont (1816-1857).

There are biographies for each individual. Sophie Madeleine Du Pont's papers appear with those of her husband, Samuel Francis Du Pont (1803-1865), in Series I.
