Part of collection: Joseph Bancroft & Sons, predecessors, and subsidiaries' records (0736)
Dates
- Creation: 1894-1913
Historical Note
Brandywine Granite Company was incorporated in Delaware on April 15, 1885, and it was one of five companies at the time quarrying granite in the area bordering the Brandywine. Its quarries were located on the opposite bank of Brandywine Creek from Joseph Bancroft & Sons at Rockford.
The first quarry on the site was begun in 1872 by Philip Tyre (1825-1913). Locke and Company, builders of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Bridge in Wilmington, Delaware, opened two additional quarries in 1882 on land owned by William Field (1836-1908). After the project finished, Field continued to operate the quarries under the name of Brandywine Granite Company. After Field retired in 1895, the company was purchased by Joseph Bancroft & Sons Co., which operated the site until 1902. The board of directors for the company decided to end operations after losing a suit for damages from an employee who had been injured while working in the quarries.
The site was then operated by the firm of Stewart and Donahue from 1902 until 1917 when the quarry was sold to the Arundel Corporation. The quarry was later sold again to T.C. Hubbert & Company. The site later became a part of Alapocas Run State Park.
