Biographical Note

John Bancroft, Sr. (1852-1933) served as President of Joseph Bancroft & Sons Co. from 1915 to 1929. He was the great-grandson of John Bancroft (1773-1852) of Record Group 1 and the great-nephew of Joseph Bancroft (1803-1874), the company's founder. Bancroft joined the company at the age of twenty-one, after briefly working in the operations of an uncle's mining and smelting business in Ohio, and continued there until his retirement as president in 1929. After retirement, he remained on the Board of Directors.

This record group consists of check stub books of Bancroft's from the Equitable Guarantee & Trust Co., Wilmington, Delaware, of which Bancroft was a member of the Board of Directors.
