Part of collection: Bank of Delaware records (1719)
Dates
- Creation: 1934-1952
Historical Note
Organized in Wilmington in the early 1890s as St. Michael's Day Nursery and Hospital for Babies, the Protestant Episcopal Church established the institution to provide care for the children of working-class mothers. The organization provided medical care, education, shelter, and adoption services, and for a time, the hospital was the only medical facility in Wilmington which would accommodate children of color. The name was changed to St. Michael's Home for Babies in 1931.
Scope and Contents
The Bank of Delaware Collection includes four cashbooks of the St. Michael's Home for Babies dating from 1937 to 1952, containing detailed daily accounts documenting expenses and donations. They probably were held by the trust department of one of the banks that is now part of the Bank of Delaware. It is not now, however, possible to attribute them to any one bank.
