Historical Note

The Security Trust Company (Wilmington, 1885-1954) was the pioneer trust company in Delaware; its incorporation in 1885 followed a series of failed attempts to bring a trust institution into the state's financial industry. The negotiations to charter this institution were drawn out as the arguments against the introduction of trust services were counterbalanced with those for the need at least for safe deposit boxes and a neutral party to act as receiver and trustee in bankruptcy cases. Ultimately a compromise was reached, and two separate but related financial companies were established: a bank (the Central National Bank) and this trust company (originally named the Security Trust and Safe Deposit Company). From their incorporation in 1885 until 1890, the two institutions were housed in the same building and shared the same first president. Over the years, the Security Trust Co. expanded its business by acting as registrar for many area business and local organizations, adding a savings department in 1916 and acquiring the National Bank of Delaware at Wilmington in 1930. This last acquisition, in particular, made the trust company a bank; in 1951, the circle was completed as this expanded and reformed Security Trust Company acquired its "sibling" Central National Bank.

Scope and Contents

This part of the Bank of Delaware collection contains important material on the development of Wilmington's first trust company. Security Trust Company records include executor, administrator, and agent ledgers dating from 1898 to 1919, which document how the company safeguarded property for prominent Wilmington individuals. Complementing these volumes are the individual ledgers dating from 1860 to 1897, which record the first clients of Security Trust Company. Another documented part of its business was its role as registrar for various businesses and organizations: the Delaware Rayon Co., the Diocese of Delaware, the Charles Warner Co., and The Russian Finance and Construction Corp.
