Part of collection: Bank of Delaware records (1719)

- Creation: circa 1920-1958
Historical Note
The Central National Bank of Wilmington (Wilmington, 1885-1951) was chartered under the National Bank Act on March 25, 1885. Its founding was conceived of as a separate yet necessary adjunct to the Security Trust and Safe Deposit Company. Though initially chartered independently, the two companies shared a President and an "office building." After 1890 they were housed separately and followed increasingly independent and even competitive futures with the Trust Company, ultimately developing banking services and establishing a trust department (circa 1921). The Central National Bank of Wilmington operated as an independent financial institution until 1951, when it was acquired and merged into the Security Trust Company.
Scope and Contents
Central National Bank's records span the twenty years before its reorganization into the Security Trust Co. The financial records include liability ledgers dating from 1938 to 1950 documenting loan payments during World War II and individual ledgers dating from 1924 to 1948 recording individual accounts. A set of records remain from the bank's trust department. The trust docket dating from 1921 to 1951 contains some investment records for individual clients and their insurance records. They include family histories that document Wilmington's middle class's social and economic lives during the early and mid-twentieth centuries.
