Scope and Contents
Series consists of work products and records of various groups within MCI responsible for public relations activities. These activities included shaping and monitoring press coverage of MCI's business, legislative and regulatory activities. The major part of this series consists of press clippings and press releases, in subseries A and B, comprehensively documenting the history of MCI and the company's attempts to shape its public image and gain popular support for its strategies. Subseries D, speeches by MCI executives to conventions, professional organizations and other forums, reflects a similar strategy within the industry and regulatory communities.
Subseries C presents an extensive collection of MCI internal employee newsletters and magazines, from a variety of divisions, functional groups, and departments. These publications span the life of the company, and in their physical evolution from simple mimeographed and xeroxed briefings, distributed across the company, to glossy broadsheets, tabloids, and magazines, reflect the dramatic growth and organizational evolution of the company. Many of the publications present MCI's attempts to retain its original entrepreneurial drive and its value on corporate identity, loyalty, and mission. A complete set of annual and quarterly reports is included.
Donation records and presentation material from various organizations, in subseries E, reflect the evolution of MCI's approach to corporate philanthropy and citizenship, from its early support of educational and job training programs for underprivileged groups, providing access to engineering careers, and educational programs for minorities, to a more organized and public image oriented strategy of funding and partnership with programs supporting entrepreneurial initiatives. The first group of files in this subseries provide documentation of the organizational history of the public relations function within MCI, its media relations strategy, and William G. McGowan's role as spokesman and symbolic figurehead for the Corporation in his last years. Also of interest is Bernard Goodrich's correspondence file, dealing with the response of the U.S. timber products industry to MCI's support of environmental organizations.
Subseries F and G comprise miscellaneous publications, reference materials, and audio-visual materials included with the records of the Public Relations and Corporate Communications groups.
