Scope and Contents

Series consists of documents and materials from functional units and from employees working on various aspects of MCI's marketing operations and activities. The series largely reflects the divisional orientation, decentralized nature and creative process of MCI's everyday marketing activities after the establishment of divestiture and equal access created a new national advertising market for residential and business telecommunications services. It also documents MCI's innovative national programs.

Subseries H, I and K provide an in-depth view of the development of MCI's Partnership Marketing, programs in which MCI entered into agreements with various national organizations, here including American Express Corporation, Amway Corporation and Sears, Roebuck & Co., to provide MCI services and marketing support under co-branded offerings to the partner organization's customers. MCI's 'Friends & Family' service, offered from 1991, was particularly influenced by the corporations long-standing and successful partnership with the Amway corporation.

Also of interest are various files, mostly in Subseries A, dealing with development of social marketing and philanthropic and community relations programs in support of MCI's corporate image, and analyses and strategies for developing MCI business in ethnic and other minority markets. Subseries J, the files of Janet Powers, provides a unique source on MCI's (ultimately unsuccessful) struggle to establish MCI Mail as a viable business concern in its own right, and provides significant insight into the early history of commercial electronic mail, office automation and the development of e-commerce.

The series also includes an extensive and interesting group of research reports and market forecasts, surveying diverse topics and markets in US and international telecommunication, particularly data transmission, networking and business services.
