Scope and Contents
The U.S. v. AT&T antitrust suit was filed by The Department of Justice [DOJ] with the District Court of Columbia in November 1974, Civil Action No. 74-1698. It was later consolidated with lawsuit U.S. v. Western Electric and AT&T, filed with District Court for the District of New Jersey on January 14, 1949 and in 1982 transferred to District of Columbia under Civil Action No. 82-0192. A consent decree in New Jersey case reached in 1956, was the subject of consideration and modification in antitrust litigation of 1970s-80s, and the Modified Final Judgment [MFJ] was issued on August 24, 1982. According to MFJ, AT&T was to be divested from its local Bell companies and to submit to the DOJ its plan for reorganization and proposed boundaries for the areas of operation for each of Bell Operating Companies [BOC] - Local Access and Transport Areas [LATA]. BOC were ordered to provide equal exchange access, information access and exchange services to all interstate carriers competing with AT&T. Sub-series presents selected documents on the litigation up to August 1982 MFJ; material on controversy concerning LATA boundaries; material on AT&T's Plan for Reorganization; and documents of MCI opposition to the attempts of General Telephone and Electronics Corporation [GTE] to create another monopoly in providing local and long distance services. Documents are organized chronologically within each group.
