Letters from Francis Gurney Smith to his wife, Elizabeth (MacKie) Smith, 1814-1830
Part of collection: Henry Belin du Pont collection (0178)
Dates
- Creation: 1814-1830
Scope and Contents
The letters of 1814 are of particular interest because they were written while Smith was in military service with the Philadelphia City Troop during the autumn of that year. Washington was burned by the British in August 1814, and a few weeks later, Baltimore was attacked. The latter city was successfully defended, but the entire Chesapeake Bay area was threatened by the presence of British forces.
