Scope and Contents

In order to protect individual privacy, a small number of selected documents have been removed and sealed for 75 years after the date of their creation. The Industrial Relations series is comprised of the following six subseries:

Subseries A. Departmental Records, 1937-1956

This subseries includes labor market surveys; documentation of payroll issues including increases, salary and wage stabilization programs; and personnel-related files regarding recruitment, policies, evaluations, seniority and wartime and post-war employment.

Subseries B. Records of Eugene G. Duenweg, Director of Industrial Relations, 1946-1964

The files relate to routine matters of personnel administration including union negotiations and contracts, hiring, recruitment, training, employment anniversaries and attempts to unionize office workers. The subseries also contains organizational charts and salary surveys mainly by job. or region. There is a substantial overlap between these records and those in Subseries C.

Subseries C. Records of William Zachry, Employee Benefits Administrator, Director of Personnel Administration, 1952-1965

The records of William Zachry include professional literature and files regarding medical insurance; payroll issues including salary surveys, taxes, and compliance with the Federal Labor Standards Act of 1938; personnel policies and transfers; and medical leaves of absence. There is a substantial overlap between these records and those in Subseries B.

Subseries D. Records of Leonard Gordon, Director of Labor Relations, 1938-1961

This subseries contains correspondence and contracts with labor unions and their local affiliates as well as correspondence and union activity reports from the company's plants. The general and plant union activity reports and the Distillery Workers Union (DWU) correspondence files are particularly noteworthy.

Subseries E. Records of Gallagher, Manager of Labor Relations, 1969-1973

Files in this subseries are comprised mainly of union activity reports sent from the plants to the New York headquarters; correspondence, both within the company and with union and government officials; clippings and copies of workers grievances.

Subseries F. Records of Jeffrey Crane, Manager of Employee Development, 1981-1983
