Scope and Contents
The Public Relations and Advertising series is comprised of the following ten subseries:
Subseries A. Advertising, 1970-1977
This subseries is divided into three sections: (1) Advertising Placement materials pertain to single or short term placements of advertisements for Seagram products in small specialty publications and sporting event programs (1974-1976). (2) Correspondence of Morton Goldberg, Assistant Media Manager, and Anne Natile, Assistant to the Media Manager (1970-1976) regards to advertising placements, most of which are for billboards and other outdoor venues. (3) The Outco Painting Contracts are for Calvert Distillers' billboard advertising (1972-1977).
Subseries B. Consumer Marketing - V.O., 1982-1993
Materials in this subseries document promotions for V.O. such as recipe booklets, brochures, special packaging, and special local and holiday campaigns. There are also a few consumer research reports testing V.O. promotions.
Subseries C. Market and Economic Analysis, 1976-1978
Marketing and brand overviews form this subseries. The overviews regard market share, sales trends, pricing, demographics and related subjects.
Subseries D. Market Research - Research and Development, 1975-1983
This subseries contains in-house and consultants' reports on tests of Seagram products and marketing.
Subseries E. Marketing - Calvert Distillers, 1975-1977
The subseries is comprised of marketing, packaging and correspondence files regarding Hudson's Bay products.
Subseries F. Public Relations Department, 1930-1988
This subseries is drawn mainly from the records of Harry Bulow, a public relations staff person at Warwick & Leger Advertising who later joined Seagram full-time. The files include clippings, correspondence, photos, press releases and speeches. Most of the records pertain to members of the Bronfman family and family philanthropies. There are also records documenting the company's real estate including 375 Park Avenue (Seagram Building), as well as the "Rutkin case". In 1948, James "Niggy" Rutkin accused the Bronfmans of cutting him out of a 1931 deal to purchase L. L. & B. Distilleries, Ltd. Rutkin eventually lost the well-publicized lawsuit. A substantial number of photographs from this subseries were sent to Hagley's Pictorial Department.
Subseries G. Sales Promotion, 1963, 1984-1985
This subseries is divided into two sections. (1) "Calvert Meets the Press" scrapbook documents the 1963 introduction of a light whisky. (2) The Captain Morgan files record various promotions for Captain Morgan products, especially at the local level.
Subseries H. Seagram Spotlight, 1948-1949, 1955, 1957
This subseries contains "dummies" for several issues of and correspondence about the Seagram employee magazine Seagram Spotlight - News of the Men and Women Who 'Sell Seagram'. Many issues of the Spotlight are located in Hagley's Published Collections department. Spotlight photographs were transferred to Hagley's Pictorial Department.
Subseries I. Philanthropy and Community Affairs, 1960-1983
This subseries contains vouchers for donations made by the Samuel Bronfrnan Foundation, 1960-1962, and documents 1979-1983 charitable activities in New York City.
Subseries J. Packaging and Advertising Artwork, 1957-1976
This subseries contains mainly paste-up boards used in designing packaging and a few promotions.
