Scope and Contents

This series includes magazine articles, newspaper articles, exhibition catalogs, auction catalogs, promotional materials from various companies, and other materials collected by William Pahlmann while performing research on the field of interior design and collecting ideas for new decoration schemes. Pahlmann compiled many of these materials while he was doing research for his syndicated newspaper column "A Matter of Taste," which ran from 1962 to 1973. Many of the drafts and final versions of his column are included in this series. The wide variety of materials included in this series demonstrates Pahlmann's thorough research habits and imaginative uses of source material. Items in this series highlight Pahlmann's interest in traditional and modern styles, his involvement with both cultural and commercial institutions, and his willingness to incorporate new man-made materials into his repertoire of design.
