Scope and Contents
This series defines the extensive publicity and public relations activities of William C. Pahlmann and William Pahlmann Associates. For the most part, they deal in a somewhat routine way with the clients and projects described in greater depth in Series . Publicity Books, Series . Client Photo Presentation Books, and Series . Publicity Photo Files. All five series can be used in a complementary fashion to build a comprehensive view of Pahlmann's projects and activities.
Publicity files deal directly with Pahlmann's publicity efforts, including the use of publicity agencies, Pahlmann's service on museum boards and design juries, publicity and self-promotion through newspapers and magazines, radio and television appearances, professional training workshops, participation in charity events, public speaking, and activities with the American Institute of Interior Designers. Notable among the last is Pahlmann's role in raising fund for the postwar restoration of the Casa Cogollo in Vincenza, Italy, commonly but erroneously called "Palladio's House."
The Press and parties subseries describes Pahlmann's extensive use of parties and similar staged events to publicize his activities and to cultivate clients, the press and material vendors. The files include guest lists, guest books, lists of contacts, correspondence on organizing the events, and clippings of press notices of the same.
The Christmas items subseries documents Pahlmann's use of custom-designed Christmas cards and large Christmas parties for staff, friends and clients to project his image. The subseries contains guest lists, invoices for gifts and examples of the Christmas cards, which were designed by Pahlmann himself, members of his staff or famous artist friends. The subseries also includes a complete run of Pahlmannia (1955-1958), a newsletter describing Pahlmann's professional and social activities.
The Miscellaneous publicity materials include photographs, newspaper and magazine clippings, tear sheets, and a catalog for Pahlmann's "Momentum" line of furniture.
The final subseries contains the actual awards (framed and unframed) and placques garnered by Pahlmann over the course of his career. Background data on many of these awards and honors may be found in the first subseries.
