Scope and Contents

This series contains the primary record of William Pahlmann's solicitation and execution of his interior design commissions. In addtion to client correspondence, the files include cost estimates, accounting records, statements, invoices, price lists, purchase orders, sketches, blueprints, photographs, specifications, agreements, project schedules, brochures, clippings, and samples of fabrics, upholstery and paint. The files cover all of Pahlmann's important commissions between 1946 and 1976, with individual items dating back to 1902. The series also documents Pahlmann's relations and transactions with vendors, including the importation of furnishings and decorations from Europe and Japan and delineate the extent of his supply network. There is also extensive documentation of Pahlmann's "Momentum" (1949) and "Hastings Square" (1952) furniture lines, the first manufactured by the Wichendon Furniture & Chair Company of Massachusetts and sold through its Contempo Shops, Inc. subsidiary, and the second by the Grand Rapids Bookcase & Chair Company of Hastings, Mich. Also documented is the relationship between Pahlmann and the textile firm of Joseph Bancroft & Sons Company, makers of Ban-lon and Everglaze fabrics. The files document the internal workings of the Pahlmann office in New York and its promotional activities, including the "Pahlmann Previews" exhibits, the "Portugal Promotion" and the promotion of the Pahlmann-designed "Path of the Sun" fabrics line. There is also some personal correspondence with friends and colleagues, and materials relating to Pahlmann's apartments in New York and his beach "shack" at Key Biscayne.
