Scope and Contents

The papers in this series represent what remains from the materials Day created and/or maintained as an employee at General Electric. The papers include correspondence, clippings, reports, meeting notes, and other significant business documents. Correspondence is arranged by the name of the correspondent when multiple letters are present. Single instances are arranged chronologically. News clippings track labor relations developments at General Electric including negotiations progress and work stoppages. Some clippings contain Day’s public comments on pressing issues at General Electric and within the business world at-large.

While at General Electric, Day worked closely on key issues such as management training, labor law reform, and labor negotiations. Such topics figure prominently in these papers, so these materials are arranged thematically. The Business management subseries (subseries C) documents Day’s involvement with management training from the late 1950’s to the early 1960’s at General Electric’s Crotonville campus. Also included are materials from his work on a GE policy committee in 1970. The Government relations subseries (subseries D) contains materials related to government intervention into business including materials on wage stabilization, an internal report on government relations, and a proposed presentation to the Senate Labor Committee in 1949. The Labor relations and collective bargaining subseries (subseries E) includes all materials related to Day’s negotiations with union leaders such as published contracts, internal research, pre-strike planning, meeting minutes, summary reports of negotiations, and contract proposal information. The bulk of this material is from 1958 to 1970. The subseries also includes scattered issues of newsletters produced internally for public and labor relations purposes. The Organization and planning subseries (subseries F) contains organizational charts and strategic planning documents for GE’s Public Affairs Services. The bulk of the materials in this subseries are from 1960. Finally, miscellaneous GE publications, press releases, and newsletters can be found in the Publications subseries (subseries G). Publications typically feature articles concerning Day. These materials are arranged by title and date when possible.
