Scope and Contents

Series II focuses on the Savannah River Project and is divided into four subseries. Changes in the contract that were negotiated between 1953 and 1983 are noted.

Subseries B contains the chronological files for the Manufacturing Division (1960-1987). The records include the files of division directors (Montford H. Smith, 1960-1966; J. D. Ellett, 1967-1968; Frank Fruesi, 1969-1980; and J. E. Conway, 1980-1983), and they document the geological survey of the Savannah River site, reactor staffing issues, monitoring of safety procedures, personnel policies, and waste disposal.

Subseries C contains administrative policy correspondence (1950-1985) which includes records documenting the decision to locate the Savannah River nuclear facility at Aiken, South Carolina; the initial organization of the DuPont Company's Atomic Energy Division; a 1955 study of the economic impact of the plant on communities near the Savannah River; radiation reports; reports on environmental radioactivity; and health protection procedures. This subseries also contains correspondence from the General Manager's office.

Subseries D includes monthly reports of the Explosives Department concerning the Atomic Energy Division (1956-1959); monthly progress reports of the Works Technical Division (containing statements about construction, production, and testing); design data reports (1957); and a 1980 proposal to create the Defense Waste Processing Facility.
