Dates
- Creation: 1939-1968
Scope and Contents
Series I focuses on the Hanford and Clinton facilities and is divided into five subseries. Subseries A consists of historical material such as a history of the Hanford Engineering Works and the TNX project (1944) and general correspondence and notes (1942-1948) that document the DuPont company's involvement. Also included are notes generated by Robert DeWright, a special assistant at the University of Chicago's Metallurgical Laboratory. These document administrative and technical policies and the decision by DuPont to loan employees to the University of Chicago. Of interest in the subseries are detailed summaries of several technical and administrative meetings involving J. Robert Oppenheimer and Crawford Greenewalt. Finally, E.B. Yancey memoranda (1943-1944) document the processes for selection, land acquisition, and construction of the Hanford site, as well as employee relations in that plant.
Subseries B contains letters relating to the Hanford and Clinton contracts, with amendments and revisions. Included are construction estimates, agreements about the loan of DuPont Company employees, and information about insurance policies and subcontractor agreements.
Subseries C includes Design Status Minutes (1943-1944) detailing progress on the design and construction of the Hanford facility. Also included are weekly reports of the Manufacturing Division and descriptions of safety procedures.
Subseries D contains subject correspondence that includes information on the Atomic Projects Committee (1948-1950) and the Plutonium Chemistry Survey (1947-1949), which the DuPont Company undertook for the Atomic Energy Commission. Also included are files on the Hanford Training Program for Savannah River Plant employees (1952-1953).
Subseries E contains Hanford Liaison Reports which the DuPont Liaison Office at Hanford generated. They are concerned primarily with the handling of visitors and requests for information about the project. This subseries includes an index to many of the Hanford records, which were later destroyed.
