Dates

  • Creation: 1899 October-1937 December

Scope and Content

Contains the minutes of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company parent companies. The series is further divided into subseries based on committee of origin (where applicable). Subseries A includes the minutes of E.I du Pont de Nemours & Company from November 1899 through February 1902. It documents the company’s incorporation with Eugene du Pont as president. Subseries B, February 1902 – November 1912, details the re-incorporation of the company in February 1902 with the installation of the three cousins as the top executives. T. Coleman du Pont was named as president, Alfred I. du Pont, vice president, and Pierre Samuel du Pont, treasurer. Subseries C, September 1915 – December 1937 are the minutes that follow the reorganization of 1915. Subseries D, dating from September 1915 to February 1940, are the minutes from the Executive Committee. Of interest in this series are minutes regarding the 1903 establishment of the Experimental Station and later DuPont’s strategy of developing technologically innovative products using a decentralized system of R & D divisions in its departments. The minutes also describe Charles Stine’s success in selling the executive committee on the investment in the fundamental research program (exec committee meeting, Dec. 22, 1926), giving rise to polymer research and Nylon. Subseries E contains the minutes from the Finance Committee, dating from October 1915 to December 1938. Here researchers can see how various projects were funded in the early twentieth century as well as the distribution of bonuses, in particular the awarding of “B” bonuses in 1916 to female employees. Finally, Subseries F is the records from the “A” Bonus Committee, February 1919 to April 1939 detailing who received bonuses and for what work they were received.
