Biographical Note

Edy Mozzi (1928-2015), was born in Schenectady, New York and received his B.S. in physics from nearby Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy. When he joined the staff of the David Sarnoff Research Center in 1952, RCA paid for him to complete a Masters of Electrical Engineering degree at the University of Pennsylvania. His first assignment was to develop the transistor coordinator for the Aviation Communications Division. Mozzi’s work applied early solid-state electronics to electronic communications. While at RCA, Mozzi completed important work on satellite and space projects on NASA contracts. He worked on the variable scan rate television system for TIROS I, the first low-Earth orbital weather satellite, launched in 1960. Later on, he worked on the communications system for the roving lunar module on the Apollo 11 mission. Mozzi’s most important work was probably on NASA’s Relay program. Project Relay was the first intercontinental communications satellite system, originally linking North America, Europe, and South America. The Relay modules were medium altitude active-repeater satellites, meaning that they received, amplified, and re-transmitted signals around the curvature of the earth rather than passively reflecting them. Relay 1, launched in 1962, sent the first television signals across the Pacific Ocean from the United States to Japan on November 22, 1963. Instead of the planned greeting, the first transmission was instead a news report on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Mozzi developed the telemetry systems for the Relay Program; he fondly remembered the camaraderie, teamwork, and late nights of Project Relay, and captures those in a scrapbook from his time on the project. Mozzi continued working at the Camden laboratories through the transfer of ownership to General Electric and then Martin Marietta until his retirement in 1994. After two years of independent consulting, he retired for good in 1996 to his family home in Cinnaminson, NJ, where he died in 2015.

Scope and Content

The Edy Mozzi Papers consist largely of a disassembled scrapbook Mozzi made documenting the RCA efforts on Project Relay (1962-1965). Newspaper and other press clippings, cartoons, NASA news releases, and photographs documenting the development and construction of Relay modules fill the former scrapbook pages. There are technical papers covering topics such as the launch procedures for Relay 1, the power supply problem in the Relay systems, a report written by Mozzi himself on the telemetry system, and photographs of the environmental testing process. The scrapbook also contained early stills of the first television programs transmitted, and pictures of President John F. Kennedy that were also sent across the Atlantic. Mozzi also collected clipping about the rival Telstar satellite program from AT&T. The latest contents of the scrapbook are related to a 1977 reunion of the engineers involved in Project Relay. In addition to the contents of the scrapbook, the papers include printed materials about RCA Video Tape, a 2001 interview with Mozzi from Public Radio International Reporter Paul Conlow, and materials relating to the transfer of the David Sarnoff Research Center to SRI, as well as Mozzi’s thoughts on that transaction.
