Historical Note
In 1942, Vladimir K. Zworykin’s Electronic Research Laboratory moved from Camden to the new RCA Laboratories facility in Princeton. The lab continued its pioneering research in television, electron microscopy, and other fields. Many of the scientists who would lead RCA Laboratories during the next several decades started their career in the Electronic Research Laboratory.
In 1954, Zworykin officially retired and RCA Laboratories was substantially reorganized. Most of the Electronic Research Laboratory’s staff were distributed among the other labs and the Radio Tube Research Laboratory under Edward W. Herold was renamed the Electronic Research Laboratory.
A small team remained with Zworykin to create the General Research Laboratory. This lab conducted research on television applications, medical electronics, and an electronic highway vehicle-control system.
In 1964, Zworykin stepped down as the head of the General Research Laboratory and it was transferred to the Astro-Electronics Division (AED) satellite laboratory as the Special Systems Research Group.
