Historical Note

When RCA Laboratories was established in Princeton in 1942, Harry F. Olson was put in charge of the Acoustic Research Laboratory. He led the laboratory (renamed Acoustical Research Laboratory in 1951 and Acoustical and Electromechanical Research Laboratory in 1954) for its entire twenty-five year existence.

Olson’s lab conducted fundamental and applied research in sound reproduction, audio and video recording, and computer input-output systems.

Scope and Content

The Acoustical and Electromechanical Research Laboratory records document the research led by Harry F. Olson into acoustics and related fields. Files include articles, patents, correspondence, photographs, notes, and schematics covering a range of topics, with a particular focus on sound reproduction.
