Historical Note
Tri-State, Inc., was incorporated in Delaware on January 21, 1938, as a subsidiary of the Stockford Farms, Inc., to operate farms situated in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and Cecil County, Maryland. In February 1938, Stockford Farms, Inc., transferred to Tri-State, Inc., the following properties: Witchcraft Farm; Coyle Farm; Carter Farm (Pennsylvania and Maryland portions) and portions of the former Cloud Farm, R. P. Mathias Farm and Hobson Farm. Additional properties were purchased in December 1943 (Ella M. Janney Farm), January 1944 (Sylvester C. & Ella S. McMullen Farm) and December 1944 (Lynch Farm).
In 1945, the company gave permission to Center Square, Inc., to use Tri-State land for the cattle-raising project and the transaction was handled through Stockford Farms, Inc. The complete liquidation of Tri-State, Inc., as the method for transferring land to Center Square, Inc., occurred on December 17, 1945, and the certificate of dissolution was issued December 30, 1946.
From April 1939 until May 1940, management services for the company were provided by another Stockford Farms, Inc., subsidiary, Foxcatcher Hounds, Inc., and from May 1940 by Stockford Farms, Inc. William du Pont, Jr. was the company vice president in 1938-1943 and president from 1943 until its dissolution.

Tri-State, Inc., papers document the company's business activities through the entire decade of its existence. The materials are organized into nine groups.
