Historical Note

Springlawn, Inc., was incorporated in Delaware on January 21, 1938, as a subsidiary of Stockford Farms, Inc., to operate lands and premises in Chester County, Pennsylvania, northeast of Lewisville. In February 1938, Stockford Farms, Inc., transferred the following properties to Springlawn, Inc.: part of the Anderson Farm, Brown Farm, Carr Farm, part of Cutting Farm, Ewing Farm, part of Janney Brothers Farm, J. B. Mackey Farm, part of G. P. Pierce farm, and Shepherd farm, assuming a mortgage on Shepherd farm with the Pennsylvania Joint Stock Land Bank (paid off in 1941). The company bought the Astle Farm in 1939; the Strickland Farm; the Springlawn Paper Mill property; part of Ferguson Mill property; and L. H. Crossan estate in 1940; Davis and L. M. Bullock properties in 1941; and the Dr. W. T. Worth property in 1943.

The company sold parts of its property during 1943-1945; in December 1945, it transferred almost all remaining land to the Center Square, Inc., to be used for its Cattle Feeding Plant Project, and to New London, Inc., in order to consolidate its property in Chester County. All the remaining assets were transferred to the parent company and Springlawn, Inc., was liquidated at the end of 1945, while the Certificate of Dissolution was issued December 30, 1946.

From April 1938 until May 1940, management services for the company were provided by another Stockford Farms, Inc., subsidiary Foxcatcher Hounds, Inc., and from May 1940 by Stockford Farms, Inc., itself. Quarterly and annual reports and tax returns for the company were prepared by certified public accountants Charles S. Rockey & Company of Philadelphia.

William du Pont, Jr. was company vice president in 1938-1943 and became president in December 1943.
