Historical Note

New London, Inc., was incorporated in Delaware on January 21, 1938, as a subsidiary of Stockford Farms, Inc., to operate real estate northwest of Lewisville, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Initially, it operated six farms-G. W. Biles, Mason, J. H. Pierce, G. P. Pierce, Janney Brothers, and Stata-which were transferred to New London, Inc., from Stockford Farms, Inc., in 1938, together with an interest in the lease of the M. Kerr Farm and mortgage on the J. E. Molloy property (this farm was purchased in 1939). Some of these farms were divided between the New London and Springlawn corporations. New London, Inc., purchased new properties in 1939 and 1940, and then sold some farms in 1944 and 1946. Before being dissolved with other Stockford Farms, Inc., subsidiaries at the end of 1946, certain acreage was transferred from Springlawn, Inc., to New London, Inc., so that New London's holdings might be rounded out into a more symmetrical shape. The company filed a Consent to Dissolution on December 30, 1946 (Letter from Secretary of State of Delaware, March 10, 1947-in the folder "State of Delaware Annual Reports").

From April 1938 until May 1940, management services for the company were provided by another Stockford Farms, Inc., subsidiary Foxcatcher Hounds, Inc., and from May 1940 by Stockford Farms, Inc.

William du Pont, Jr. was company vice president from its incorporation until 1943 when he replaced E. C. McCune as president.

Scope and Content

New London, Inc., papers cover the entire period of its existence from January 1938 until the end of 1946. It also includes some material from Stockford Farms, Inc. (which preceded the organization of its subsidiaries), such as deeds and lease agreements, insurance policies, correspondence, and paid bills related to the property later transferred to New London, Inc. Some letters and invoices are addressed to Foxcatcher Hounds, Inc., which provided management for the company.

The subseries includes a minute book, account books, corporation federal and State of Delaware tax returns, annual and quarterly farm operation reports including financial statements by farm and tenant, bank statements, correspondence, invoices and receipts, and plans of properties. Correspondence and bills describe company relations with farm tenants, electric companies and contractors, insurance and real estate agents, local tax authorities, accountants and lawyers; United States Department of Agriculture Farm Security Administration records cover topics regarding deed and agreement preparation, insurance agreements, extension of electrical services to farm properties, and farmers' participation in the federal rural rehabilitation program.
