Historical Note

The company was incorporated in Delaware on October 25, 1945, as a subsidiary of Shapdale, Inc., and registered to do business as a foreign corporation in Maryland on January 4, 1946. It was organized to raise and sell cattle. Foxcatcher Livestock Company borrowed the sum of $79,000 from Stockford Farms, Inc., to purchase a herd of one hundred and fifty cows and fifty heifers from Kansas. The company opened two bank accounts with the Delaware Trust Company: an Operating account for payment of current bills and a Special account for the purchase of capital assets. William du Pont, Jr. regularly contributed to both accounts from his personal funds. The company also opened a Construction account from which it paid for improvements made on land owned not only by Foxcatcher Livestock Company, but also by Fair Hill, Inc. The company closed its Special account and transferred money to the Operating account in January 1960.

As its main business, Foxcatcher Livestock Company raised the Hereford brand of livestock, continuing the business of Center Square, Inc., and raised and upgraded a herd of Santa Gertrudis livestock.

William du Pont, Jr. became interested in Santa Gertrudis cattle-the beef breed developed in 1920s at the King Ranch in Southern Texas and officially recognized by the United States Department of Agriculture in 1940-as early as 1942. With the recommendation and assistance of Robert J. Kleberg Jr. who was the owner of the King Ranch (du Pont's friend and long-time associate in Thoroughbred racing), du Pont developed a breeding program to produce first-cross heifers. This was done by crossing Brahman bulls on Shorthorn cows and then mating those heifers to Santa Gertrudis bulls from the Kings Ranch. "By May, 1954, he was ready to have his first home-bred animals classified by Santa Gertrudis Breeders International and to introduce Santa Gertrudis bulls he had raised from his purebred into his commercial herds." (Note, The du Pont Contribution to Worldwide Herd Improvement, by John. A. Cypher Jr., 1966-in William du Pont, Jr. Santa Gertrudis File, folder "Santa Gertrudis Cattle Sale June 1, 1966-Advertising and Information"). After du Pont's death, his Santa Gertrudis purebred cattle were offered for sale by his estate and purchased entirely by his long-time business partner Kings Ranch, Kingsville, Texas, in July 1966.

In 1952, William du Pont, Jr. became a member of the Santa Gertrudis Breeders International Association which had been organized in 1950 in Kingsville, Texas. His herd was recognized as one of the first and largest "home-grown" herds in the breed. Du Pont's cattle farms were located at Walnut Farm, Boyce, Virginia, for purebred cattle; at a new farm bought in 1953 at Easton, Maryland, to keep cattle brought from Oklahoma; and at Fair Hill, Maryland, for commercial herds.

The Foxcatcher Livestock Company was involved in various construction and farm maintenance projects, which included other companies-Shapdale, Stockford Farms, and Fair Hill-which over a long period of time created mutual indebtedness. To simplify corporate structures and eliminate certain inter-corporate indebtedness, the plan of reorganization and recapitalization of these companies was accepted in May 1962. As a result of this plan, the Foxcatcher Livestock Company merged into Fair Hill, Inc., and was dissolved on June 22, 1962; all of its assets were transferred to the sole stockholder William du Pont, Jr., and the ownership of Foxcatcher Livestock business was changed from a corporation to individual. The property of Foxcatcher Livestock was sold on February 11, 1967.

William du Pont, Jr. was company president during its entire existence.

Scope and Content

Foxcatcher Livestock Company papers cover the company's business during its existence, 1945-1962, and include some preceding and later records related to du Pont's activities in breeding and raising livestock. Invoices and receipts and Banking Papers cover the period 1962-1965 when the company merged with Fair Hill, Inc., and was financed from the Foxcatcher Livestock account. The Santa Gertrudis Cattle File reflects du Pont's initial interest in starting the new herd of American cattle and contains valuable details on the process.
