Historical Note

Fair Hill, Inc. (Maryland) was incorporated in Maryland on October 26, 1945, as a subsidiary of Shapdale, Inc., after the reorganization of holdings of Stockford Farms, Inc., in 1945. The board of directors was elected in March 1946, and the corporation commenced business during the summer of 1946. Fair Hill, Inc. (Maryland) leased William du Pont, Jr.'s agricultural real estate that was located in Cecil and Montgomery Counties in Maryland and that had been acquired from Center Square, Inc., which was dissolved in 1946. The company had offices at Fair Hill, Maryland and Wilmington, Delaware, with the Corporation Trust Company of Maryland serving as its resident agent until replaced by the Maryland attorney William Wilson Bratton in October 1951. William du Pont, Jr. was company president from its organization until his death in December 1965.

All the construction and repair work on the property was performed by the Foxcatcher Livestock Company, which paid county and state real estate tax for the property in 1946 and which was the owner of personal property, including cattle and livestock, in 1948.

The Maryland corporation Fair Hill, Inc., is not to be confused with the Delaware corporation with the same name, which appeared in 1940 as a result of the name change of Foxcatcher Hounds, Inc., and was dissolved in December 1946 in the process of reorganization of Stockford Farms, Inc.

On July 12, 1962, the plan of reorganization and recapitalization for Shapdale, Inc., Stockford Farms, Inc., Fair Hill, Inc., and Foxcatcher Livestock Company was approved, under the terms of which Foxcatcher Livestock Company merged into Fair Hill, Inc.

Fair Hill, Inc. (Maryland) was dissolved on May 16, 1975, due to the sale of the property to the State of Maryland by the heirs of William du Pont, Jr. (Articles of Dissolution see in correspondence of Jean Ellen du Pont McConnell-Series VIII: McConnell Family Papers).
