Historical Note

The company was incorporated in Delaware on January 21, 1938, as one of the seven subsidiaries of Stockford Farms, Inc., which divided its holdings in Cecil County, Maryland, and Chester County, Pennsylvania, between Center Square, Foxcatcher Hounds (name changed to Fair Hill, Inc., in 1940), Little Elk, New London, Springlawn, Tri-State, and Turkey Town corporations. Center Square, Inc., operated farms in Maryland and Pennsylvania, in the general neighborhood of the so-called Old Center Square Methodist School House. The company bred and raised a herd of Hereford beef cattle for sale and grew and sold alfalfa for hay. William du Pont, Jr. was the president, and Guy E. Sawyer was the treasurer and assistant secretary.

In October 1944, Center Square, Inc., initiated the Cattle Feeding Plant project, which required new financing from Stockford Farms, Inc., and the use of land belonging to its other subsidiaries: Tri-State, Springlawn, Turkey Town, and Fair Hill (former Foxcatcher Hounds, Inc.) companies. The restructuring of Stockford Farms, Inc., properties led to the dissolution and liquidation of its seven subsidiaries during 1945-1947 (including Center Square, Inc.) and the organization of two new subsidiaries: Fair Hill, Inc., in Maryland and Springlawn Corporation in Pennsylvania.
