Scope and Content
Horse shows were held at the du Ponts' Montpelier estate from 1906, under the rules and regulations of the Association of American Horse Shows, Inc. From 1925 to 1927, the show included the autumn meetings of Foxcatcher Hounds Hunt Club; from 1928 to1933, there were joint meeting of Foxcatcher Hounds Hunt Club and Montpelier Hunt. Beginning in 1934, the event was called the Montpelier Hunt Race Meeting. The annual meeting included several races, both flat and steeplechase: The Orange County Steeplechase, The Virginia, The Montpelier Hunt Challenge Cup, The Bellevue, The Albemarle, and The Manton Manor. In 1937, the steeplechase handicap race in memory of Noel Laing, an amateur racing sportsman, was added to the meeting.
William du Pont, Jr. was the horse show president, and his sister Marion was the secretary and treasurer; both of them were members of the Race Committee of the Race Meetings. G. Dudley Gray was Montpelier Hunt race meeting secretary.
The subseries contains papers related to the organization of shows and races, 1920-1943: publications (official catalogs, programs, and prize lists), with printer's proofs and preparatory material (drafts, entry forms, participants and winners lists, saliva tests); advertisements; invoices and bank statements; correspondence of William du Pont, Jr., Marion du Pont Somerville Scott, G. Dudley Gray with show and race participants, Association of American Horse Shows, National Steeplechase and Hunt Association, advertising sport periodicals and printing agencies. It also includes a Montpelier Hunt Race lapel pin (badge) and a stamp ordered by Marion du Pont in 1936. Files are organized in chronological order.
