Scope and Content
This series contains receipts and other financial papers documenting William du Pont's expenses from the 1880s through 1927. While the papers for the 1880s (about 0.1 linear ft.) pertain to business, the rest of the series documents William du Pont's personal and family expenses.
During the 1880s, William du Pont was secretary and treasurer of the Repauno Chemical Company (and president after the death of his cousin Lammot du Pont in March 1884) and was also the treasurer of Hercules Powder Company and the Torpedo Company. He kept track of the financial dealings between these companies and E.I. du Pont de Nemours Company. Documents from the 1880s include monthly statements of accounts, salary receipts, receipts of contractors involved in the Repauno mill construction, and statements of materials bought by Repauno Company.
For the decade while the family lived in England, documents reflect William du Pont's activities in the United States, which were either controlled by du Pont himself or by his personal secretary Charles (Chas.) K. Lennig. Only a small portion of the receipts for 1900 were from England.
In 1902, the family returned from England and moved into their new house in Montpelier, Virginia. There is a gap in the chronologically organized material for the period of 1902-1912, which is partly covered by the files of the Special Project section (see below). For the years 1913-1928, there are numerous documents and, together with the Special Projects files, they present a comprehensive picture of the family expenses.
The documents consist of:

Files of 1922-1925 include William du Pont's accounts with Montpelier Supply Company. Files from the 1920s contain expenses of du Pont's adult children Marion du Pont (Somerville) and William du Pont Jr. and William du Pont's stepson Captain George Zinn, as well as educational and medical bills for Annie Rogers du Pont's relative Theodore B.
