National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs (NFBPWC), 1950-1983
Part of collection: Elva M. Chandler papers (2057)
Dates
- Creation: 1950-1983
Scope and Content
The subseries consists of chronological files (1950-1982) containing mailing sent by the National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs (NFBPWC), and includes letters from officials (photocopies or duplicates) with information on the organization's programming initiatives with recommendations for state and local programming. The programs' subjects reflect the interests of women in the business and professional world through the 1960s through 1980s and document the strategies used in pursuing goals, which were often legislative. There are also letters pertaining to membership which contain statistics by state on the number of members and the exhortations to increase membership. Other types of records include membership information kits, pamphlets, and bulletins.
The NFBPWC held annual national conventions which Chandler regularly attended from 1963-1983. The convention records include packets containing annual reports, brochures, convention programs, emblem merchandise catalogs, financial statements, printed addresses of keynote speakers, and campaign literature of those seeking elective office in the NFBPWC.
The NFBPWC also sponsored National Legislative Conference, held in Washington, DC annually beginning in 1967. Chandler's records for this conference date from 1970, 1972, 1974, and 1978 and consist of agenda, schedules, and publications. At that time, the organization was focused on informing its members about the Equal Rights Amendment and encouraging its passage.
Additional materials in this subseries include the newsletter Hustlers’Happenings (1970-1982), which appears to have been published irregularly by BPWC members in Las Vegas, Nevada; Widening Horizons (1965-1982), a publication of the International Federation of BPWC; and non-NFBPWC publications that Chandler probably received at conferences.
For high school girls interested in the organization, Nike Clubs were operated by local chapters.
