Historical Note
The Foote Concrete Machinery Co. manufactured road building machinery. Brothers, Chester T. Foote (1863-1918) and Charles E. Foote (1858-1938) were inventors and concrete contractors in Nunda, New York. They founded the Foote Concrete Machinery Co. in 1903.
In 1896, the Foote brothers invented the first continuous flow concrete mixer in order to build concrete sidewalks. Originally hand-cranked, the mixer became powered by a gas engine in 1898. The mixer was the first automatic proportioning cement mixer in the United States. George E. Blood (1876-?) was the chief engineer for the company and improved the design of the paving mixer. In 1918, Blood implemented the use of crawlers instead of steel wheels for propulsion paving mixer and named the product the Multifoote.
At the end of the nineteenth century less than fifty percent of roads in American cities were paved. The Good Roads Movement was founded in the 1870s by bicycling enthusiasts who wanted improved roads, by the twentieth century the movement was championed by automobile advocates. The Multifoote Paver served as a vital piece of heavy equipment for the Good Roads Movement. It enabled municipalities and construction companies to build their roads with concrete rather than with macadam and asphalt. The Multifoote Paver could lay over 500 feet of road in a sixteen hour workday.
The firm incorporated and established its main sales office to Chicago in 1918 and changed its name in 1931 to the Multifoote Sales Company. In 1948, the company was acquired by the Blaw-Knox Company, a large manufacturer of road paving equipment. The Nunda plant remained open until 1955.
Arrangement
The photographs are organized into two groups, one showing just the product and one showing the product in use. The collection has been arranged chronologically.
