Historical Note
Hoopes Brothers & Darlington began in West Chester in 1867 manufacturing wooden spokes for wheels. By the eighteen-eighties it was one of the largest wooden wheel makers in the country. It remained in business long after other wheel factories had closed, selling wooden wheels to the Amish and as decorative items. In 1969 the Smithsonian Institution and Hagley documented the soon-to-be-closed factory, taking photographs and producing a short documentary film, "The Last Wheel Works," on the facility.
Scope and Content

The collection includes a copy of the final documentary film, raw footage of the sawmill, office, and factory, and photography by Hagley Museum and Library staff photographer. This was done to document the factory before it closed. Photographs show the steps involved in the making of wooden wheels from the delivery of the logs to the finished project. Identified employees are shown operating woodworking machinery. There is also a copy of a 1928 fire insurance map of the factory, and an informal portrait of Thomas Hoopes, then head of the company.
