Historical Note

Gayle Porter Hoskins (1887-1962) was an artist and illustrator. Hoskins born in Brazil, Indiana moved to Chicago with his family in 1904, and began studying at the Chicago Art Institute. In 1907, Hoskins was a mural designer for the Marshall Field and company. Later that year he was invited by renowned artist Howard Pyle (1853-1911) to study at his school in Wilmington, Delaware. Hoskin's illustrations began to be published in magazines, on book covers, and in calendars. From 1918 through the 1930s Hoskins was a prominent illustrator.

Hoskins with fellow illustrator, Frank Schoonover (1877-1972) co-founded the Wilmington Sketch Club. He founded the Wilmington Academy of Art in 1928 and taught several classes. In the late 1930s he began painting portraits and historical subjects and continued to do so until his death in 1962.
