Historical Note

The Johns Manville Corporation is an American insulation manufacturer. The company began in 1858 as a roofing business called H.W. Johns Manufacturing Company. The company eventually merged with Manville Covering Company, which specialized in asbestos, and formed the Johns Manville Corporation. After many years as a successful insulation company, Johns Manville began facing asbestos-related legal claims from its employees. The company filed for bankruptcy in 1982. Johns Manville is currently a building materials producer.

Scope and Content

This film is a rare post-war era industrial film from Johns-Manville, Luther Reed productions about the importance of insulating your home. The film is framed by the story of a young newly-wed couple that is unsure about accepting an old house from a family member due to its poor insulation. There are animations, demonstrations, and miniatures that help explain the science of insulation. The process of making "rock wool" insulation is detailed, both loose and batts. Safety concerns are addressed, ending in a demonstration of the insulations fireproof qualities. The film also shows skilled installation crews installing the rock wool using modern pneumatic techniques which do not effect the appearance of the home.
