Historical Note

The Sunoco Oil Company is a leading provider of oil for the United States. Originally founded in the late 1880s in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as the People's Natural Gas Company has undergone many name changes throughout its 125 years of operations. The company was founded by partners Joseph Newton Pew (1848-1912) and Edward O. Emerson (born circa 1839). The name has changed four times since the inception of the company from the Sun Oil Company of Ohio in 1890 to the Sun Oil Company in 1922, to Sun Company, Inc. in 1976 and finally resting on the current name of Sunoco in 1998. The company began its business with producing, transporting and storing oil as well as refining and shipping. The first service station providing their oil to the public was opened in Ardmore, Pennsylvania in 1920. As the Sun Oil Company, the business became a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange on November 12, 1925. As a major Oil Company in the United States, Sun Oil diversified and established subsidiary companies and partnerships to expand the interests of the company to other ventures including mining and shipbuilding. In 2010 however, Sunoco announced it would exit the oil refining business, an aspect of their operations since the beginning. Sunoco was purchased by Dallas-based company Energy Transfer Partner, a business Sunoco is still a part of today. Currently, Sunoco is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and still enjoys status as a leading oil provider.
