Historical Note

A machine shop is a place where skilled workers use machine tools to make parts. The parts are usually made of metal or plastic, although other materials can be used. The parts can be used in house to produce other goods or they can be the end product sold to outside buyers. Cutting, drilling, shaping and finishing are some of the functions performed in a machine shop. In the early twentieth century, the power for the machine tools came from a mechanical belt that was powered by a central steam engine.
