Historical Note
Waugh Equipment Company manufactured equipment for the production of railway cars. One of their main products was draft gears. Waugh held a thirty-five percent market share on draft gears in 1930, largely because it was the subsidiary of Armour and Company, the giant meatpacking company based in Chicago. Armour coerced the railroads into buying equipment from Waugh in order to maintain Armour’s rail shipping business. Waugh Equipment Company was located in Depew, New York, in Erie County. The Waugh-Gould Laboratory tested equipment for strains, vibrations, and noises.
Scope and Content
This item consists of a jacketed folder containing identified prints showing the complete production processes used to fabricate draft gears used in freight cars and locomotives. This promotional piece was targeted to railroad officials. Many of the views, although small, show steel workers.
