Abstract

Because of rampant counterfeiting in the 1860s, Secretary of Treasury Hugh McCulloch (1808-1895) made an unprecedented decision to allow Robert C. Naramore (1829-1895) to photograph legal tender so that the images could be used to detect counterfeit bills. The photographs were published by the American Photograph Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut. This small album has eighteen albumen photographs of U.S. bank notes.

Historical Note

Because of rampant counterfeiting in the 1860s, Secretary of Treasury Hugh McCulloch (1808-1895) made an unprecedented decision to allow Robert C. Naramore (1829-1895) to photograph legal tender in all denominations from $1.-$1,000. According to Treasury, the photographs would be published at one-quarter of the size, and then they could be used to detect counterfeit bills. The photographs were published by the American Photograph Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut. There were eighteen photographs that were either mounted on a single sheet as a poster or individually mounted on cards.

Scope and Content

This small album has eighteen albumen photographs of U.S. bank notes, dating from 1866, including one, two, five, ten, twenty, fifty, one hundred, five hundred, and one thousand dollar bills.

On the reverse of the photographs in the album is the following: A Souvenir of the United States Treasury Notes and National Bank Notes, by photographic copies of the circulating notes issued by Act of Congress, taken from proof impressions on file in the U.S. Treasury Depar't.
