Abstract

Crawford H. Greenewalt (1902-1993) was an executive with the DuPont Company and president of the firm from 1948 to 1962. The collection consists of photographs and other materials related to Crawford Greenewalt's career with the DuPont Company and his involvement with corporate boards and other business and scientific organizations, etc., such as Boeing, M.I.T., Smithsonian Institution, and Radio Free Europe.

Biographical Note

Crawford H. Greenewalt (1902-1993) was an executive with the DuPont Company and president of the firm from 1948 to 1962. He joined the company in 1922 and served as a supervisor on the nylon project in the 1930s and during the war as technical liason on the Manhattan Project. He was an accomplished amateur photographer and ornithologist and author of a study of hummingbirds (1960). After his retirement from DuPont, Greenewalt served on a number of corporate boards, business, political, scientific, civic and charitable organizations. Greenewalt played an important role in shaping American business and science policy in the Cold War decades.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of photographs and other materials related to Crawford Greenewalt's career with the DuPont Company and his involvement with corporate boards and other business and scientific organizations, etc., such as Boeing, M.I.T., Smithsonian Institution, and Radio Free Europe. Photographs, both loose and in five albums, include views of Crawford Greenewalt attending meetings, luncheons, dinners, and dedications, giving speeches, receiving honorary degrees and awards, attending the New York World's Fair of 1965, and visiting various DuPont Company plants. There are also views of the construction of the DuPont telescope of Las Campanas Observatory, 1972. Many photographs in the collection are group portraits, including the boards of directors of the DuPont Company and the Boeing Company; the Smithsonian Institution's Board of Regents; the M.I.T. Corporation; and the Atomic bomb group at the inauguration of Dr. Arthur H. Compton as Chancellor of Washington University in 1946. There are also several photographs with Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson, some signed.

In addition, the collection includes a full album documenting a visit Greenewalt made to the Seaford Nylon Plant for a broadcast of Cavalcade of America, May 27, 1952. Another album consists of photographs of Greenewalt's visit to the Parlin Plant, May 4, 1950. A third album documents the Board of Directors trip to London for a DuPont Company Board Meeting in September of 1984.

The collection includes sound recordings of two addresses made on the occasion of the dedication of the DuPont Company's Expanded Experimental Station, May 10, 1951, one by Crawford Greenewalt and one by Dr. James B. Conant, president of Harvard University. There are also nine videotapes in the collection. Three are from the Lavoisier Awards, 1991. The others include "A Quest for New Discoveries: DuPont Pharmaceuticals"; "737-500 Celebration"; "Reflections of the Future...Revealing the Past, January 1989, University of Arizona, Steward Mirror Lab"; "The Carnegie Idea," 1989; "Eisenhower, Freedom's Voice"; and James du Pont on NBC Sunday/Today.
