Historical Note

In 1903 the DuPont Company's Executive Committee established the Experimental Station, a research facility located on the banks of the Brandywine Creek across from DuPont's first black powder works. Initially, the Experimental Station was to be a small laboratory to screen inventions which were coming into the company from outside independent inventors, but soon its mission was altered and it became a large industrial research facility focused on innovative advancements in chemistry.

An aerial view of the DuPont Company's Experimental Station. The photograph was published in Science and Corporate Strategy: DuPont R&D, 1902-1980 by David A. Hounshell and John K. Smith, page 326. Caption reads, "This photograph shows the Greenewalt Laboratory devoted to life sciences research at the lower right of the Station campus."
